“Lotza” is the local term used by the Fathers of the historic Toplou Monastery in Sitia, derived from the Venetian

“Lotza” is the local term used by the Fathers of the historic Toplou Monastery in Sitia, derived from the Venetian word “Loggia”, meaning a covered exterior balcony or corridor. In this ornate corridor of the Monastery, on June 26, 1821, Abbot Zacharias and 13 monks were massacred by the Ottomans. This label pays tribute to their sacrifice.

Varieties

Mandelaria 100%

Lotza is produced using the traditional method of sun-drying the Mandelaria grapes, concentrating their aromas and flavors. Despite the drying process, the wine remains dry, as fermentation is completed without any residual sugars. After fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in oak barrels, enhancing its rich taste and complexity, which reflect the unique terroir of Toplou Monastery.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Aromas of ripe red fruits, coffee, vanilla, and earthy notes.

Palate: Complex flavors of ripe red fruits and spices, with intense tannins and high acidity that allow it to age beautifully.

Finish: Long and complex, with hints of coffee, vanilla, and dark fruits.

Food Pairing

General Categories: Red Meats, Game, Hard Cheeses.

Specific Dishes:

Roast Venison with Berry Sauce: The complexity of the wine complements game meats perfectly.

Beef with Sauce: The flavors of ripe fruits and spices pair wonderfully with the rich beef sauces.

Traditional Hard Cheese (such as Parmesan): The intense flavor of the cheese pairs beautifully with the wine’s complexity.

Bottle Aging

Up to 10 years. As it ages, it develops more complex aromas and flavors, enhancing its complexity and structure.

The Fix brewery was founded in 1864 by Johann Karl Fix (German: Fuchs) in Athens and was the first major brewery in Greece. About 30 years earlier, his father had started brewing beer in Greece. As purveyor to the court of the Greek king, the company was able to maintain a monopoly position in the Greek market for about 100 years. After the bankruptcy of the company in 1983 and several failed revival attempts to revive it, Fix beer has been brewed again in its own brewery since 2009. The reason for this is the relatively high popularity of beer in the country for Mediterranean countries. Fix Hellas is a premium lager with it’s soft flavour, has a balanced bitterness which enhances the flavours from fermentation. It has a prevailing scent of fresh apple and banana. The Olympic Brewery was bought out by Carlsberg in 2015.

ALFA Beer produced by Athenian Brewery in Greece, is one of the oldest brands of beer in Greece and it was the first consumer beer with a Greek name. A blond light lager with a shimmering gold colour and mild malt yeast aroma. This beer is a cool thirst quencher, with rich foam and easy to drink perfectly matches with Greek flavours. Combines a bright golden colour and soft scent malt with 5% alcohol content. It is brewed with the same traditional recipe, entirely in Greece, with 100% Greek barley. Character of ALFA is soft and perfectly balanced both in taste and aroma. That’s why it goes very well with tender meats, seafood, home cooked dishes for the Sunday table and any dish that “goes in the middle” for a group of friends to share. The perfect mix of ALFA perfume is as strong as the bonds we have with our own people. It’s full taste is identified with the full taste of the most beautiful memories that remain unchanged over time. And her hops come to add tension to our palate, as well as the intense moments of our lives that are necessary to maintain relationships over time. At each table, ALFA beer will be there to uniquely accompany our moments.
